The Academic Network for Open Innovation (OI-Net) is designed to facilitate European cooperation on open innovation by outlining and exchanging up-to-date concepts, and good practices in open innovation and open innovation education.

As emphasized in the presentation of the initial situation, mainly so far [as of early 2013] some curricula on Innovation Management do exist. However, they do not deal properly with open innovation (only a very few HEIs added some modules or even courses related to open innovation as such). Based on the convergence of the analysis by the various practitioners and research networks, the need to include OI as a full teaching discipline has to be fulfilled to meet the job market needs for skilled employees and therefore to increase the competitiveness of the European enterprises. This problem is especially critical to the SMEs which cannot afford big innovation management teams with specialised skills and which need the specialists who have a holistic understanding of open innovation processes and activities.

1° Fill the gap in terms of structured OI in HE

In order to fill the gap in open innovation education, the OI-Net project aims to develop Common Curricula Framework on Open Innovation based on extensive input from industry, consortium partners and involving other university staff and students (e.g. by conducting survey on Industrial Needs for Open Innovation Education within European companies; by analysing existing curricula on innovation and open innovation across Europe).

Apart from developing Common Curricula Framework on Open Innovation, as well as guidelines for implementing open innovation to higher Education curricula and policy recommendations.

2° Demonstrate the implementation/integration of the European OI curricula (incl. tuning & transfer process)

  • by implementing at least three pilots using Common Curricula Framework and materials available on OI-Net platform
  • by collecting feedback on the content and teachers skills required for delivering open innovation courses

The on-line survey was carried out to identify generic and specific competences and skills for teaching open innovation among teachers in several countries across Europe. Moreover, the feedback was collected also from students participating in the pilots.

Apart from Common Curricula Framework, OI-Net project aiming at creation of Manual for New Courses on Open Innovation Development, Considering the Multi-disciplinary Approach in Open Innovation and Higher Education.


3° Develop a European Community of Practice on OI in HE + observatory/think-tank

That implies an Open Innovation Platform ( implemented by OI-Net with the contribution of all its members. The OI-Net platform provides extensive amounts of resources for Open Innovation educators as well as companies dealing with or planning to implement open innovation as well as policy makers. It provides information on upcoming events in the field of open innovation and open innovation education; links with other initiatives, cases, reports etc. and encourages sharing experiences as well as materials between OI-Net communities.

Apart from the OI-Net Platform, OI-Net organized many different events, workshops, seminars bringing the community of practice closer (e.g. inviting guest speakers from industry as well as policy makers to OI-Net meetings) and established collaboration with other initiatives (e.g. The OI-Market Square and the Special Interest Group on Open Innovation as well as Teaching and Coaching Innovation, both part of International Society of Professionals in Innovation Management; or Open Innovation Strategy and Policy Group).

4° Implement support actions to OI in HE

That implies development of pedagogical guidelines and guidance as an output as well as piloting oi courses. Furthermore, different workshops on insights on teaching open innovation have been carried out to assist higher education institutions in deploying Open Innovation curricula and dedicated section on the OI-Net platform has been introduced that provides supporting slides and videos.

5° Build sustainability, shape the future of HE

OI-Net is facilitating European cooperation by outlining and exchanging the up-to-date open innovation experience and good practices, collecting, comparing and consolidating training content on open innovation, developing pedagogical guidelines and bringing open innovation education to practice. The project creates a network, which facilitates communication of open innovation teachers and practitioners with each other and is sustained via the OI-Net web platform.

One of the important tasks of the OI-Net is to integrate the demand-driven approach to education: to incorporate business and industry needs for the open innovation skilled employees into the curricula building.

The sustainability is also achieved by developing by building Open Innovation Community around OI-Net platform and OI-Net initiatives.

6° Implement dissemination and supporting facilities from the very start and promote open approaches

  • The Common Curricula Framework developed during the project is available for free re-use by all OI-Net members and beyond.
  • By organizing workshops and seminars OI-Net facilitates communication between teachers, researchers and practitioners on topics related to open innovation and open innovation education and this communication will be sustained via the OI-Net platform.
  • To foster the recognition of implementing open innovation as a teaching discipline, OI-Net structured its partnership and activities with other initiatives e.g. OISPG and ISPIM society and will disseminate the results and open innovation principles via ISPIM conferences and by participation to international conferences in and outside of Europe.
