New Bulgarian University was established on September 18, 1991 by decision of the Grand National Assembly. On July 5, 2001 NBU received institutional accreditation from the National Agency for Assessment and Accreditation for a maximum 5-year period, and in December 2006 received institutional accreditation for a maximum period. Since 2004, the NBU has been approved by The Open University in the UK, as an appropriate organisation to offer higher education programmes leading to Open University Validated Awards. The University in Bulgaria introduces first credit system, the teaching of professional degrees, bachelor's and master's degree, distance and continuing education.  Personalities of world renown are honorary professors and honorary doctors of the NBU, including - Richard Rorty, Vera Mutafchieva, Julia Kristeva, Jean-Pierre Vernant , Milcho Leviev, Robert Young, Raina Kabaivanska, Lord Ralf Dahrendorf, Terry Eagleton and others.

Schools

he Schools are established on the principle of educational degrees. The real academic life is concentrated therein, and their main task is to organize the educational activity in a manner, connecting the research activity with the educational process and to direct the academic processes to the pursuing of the mission and educational philosophy of the university. The schools are governed by School Councils and Deans. The Schools of NBU are: School of Basic Education, Undergraduate School, Graduate School and School of distant, electronic and continuing education.

The programs of the School of Basic Education provide, in the first two years of study in the Bachelor degree, general educational preparation, interdisciplinary in nature, assisting the students in their choice of specialized bachelor program, forming the needed language and computer skills and providing basic knowledge in the selected professional field.

 The programs of the Undergraduate School provide specializing education in the specified professional field through selected modules of the educational program. The students can choose education in one bachelor program or two bachelor programs in parallel. In the first case they choose major and minor modules of the program, and in the second case – major and minor program.

The Graduate School provides masters and doctoral programs, focusing on the research activity in the education and on the professional specialization.
The center for Distance and E-Learning (TSDEO) has a faculty status and is responsible for programs in Distance Education (DLP), but also combines features and methodological point of e-learning in all programs of NBU.
Schools are managed by the faculty council, dean and director. Dean of faculty has administration, serving students and teachers and take care of development and material provision of the learning process. Each faculty has a committee of accreditation of courses and programs, training curricula, scholarships.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Education in the programs and courses for continuing education of the New Bulgarian University is suitable for all age groups. Its aim is to provide professional qualification and re-qualification for specialists in various fields in accordance with the requirements of the changing and dynamically developing social environment. In addition to traditional programs and courses, continuing education centers organize academic lectures and seminars, symposia and events, which modernize the human world view. Continuing education is suitable for everybody who wants to obtain new knowledge, use their time rationally, change their profession and even for applicants who have not yet been admitted, for managers of major organizations, who want to ensure more professional knowledge for their employees. DEPARTMENTS AND CENTERS

The departments and the centers are scientific communities, established on the principle of uniting of teachers and research-workers in one scientific field. They represent an open system, relating the university to the outside world. They develop scientific and creative activities, and work on international and national projects. The departments are directly responsible for the recruitment and quality of the academic staff, monitoring of the quality of the educational programs, marketing research and realization of the relation between the training and the practice. The departments develop for the schools new educational programs or update the existing ones, depending on the scientific challenges of the specific time and in accordance with the market niches.

RESEARCH

Research activities in the New Bulgarian University are organized by the academic staff of the Departments. Main priorities underlying the research policy of the NBU are University’s establishment as an international research centre and its integration in various international university networks, implementation of projects, development of interdisciplinary research and integration of research and studies.

Departments and centers are open to the outside environment. They are responsible for organizing seminars, conferences and other public events, the implementation of research projects to link the training and practice. Each of the departments in the University has its regular scientific seminar in which present and discuss current topics of the scientific area.  
At the University has a system to evaluate the performance of departments and centers, carried out at the agreed procedures and criteria for evaluation. The purpose of this assessment system is to stimulate and activate the departments in developing their scientific and creative research. Each academic year shall prepare and adopt a ranking of departments according to the general outcome of the evaluation criteria.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

The University has become part of the international university community through the achieved academic mobility of teachers and students, through its participation in bilateral collaborations, through joint projects, through membership in significant world educational institutions.

The New Bulgarian University is the exclusive representative for Bulgaria of The Open University (United Kingdom) in the field of distance education.

The New Bulgarian University is a full member of the Francophone University Agency (AUF) – a world organization with a network of many educational and cultural institutions from Europe, Africa, the USA, and Canada aimed at supporting the development and exchange in the field of education and culture. As a result of this membership, a Francophone Unit has been established within the NBU offering a BA Program in Political Sciences. Membership in AUF enables students and lecturers to improve their qualification in the many academic institutions included in the Francophone network of the Agency.

Also, the New Bulgarian University works on programs of the European Union – SOCRATES, TEMPUS, LEONARDO, etc. One of the greatest partners of the NBU is the Higher Education Support Program of Open Society Institute, Budapest (HESP). It contributes to research and educational initiatives, exchange of students, lecturers and administrative staff and provides funding for students and equipment for the University complex.

The New Bulgarian University organizes annual summer international schools – semiotics, cognitive science, mass communications, archeology and theater. It offers a master class in opera singing and initiates many seminars and conferences where students meet with distinguished scholars from other countries.

The New Bulgarian University is member of competent international organizations and it plays an important role for the comparison of studies at the University with the world standards: the European University Association (EUA), the International Education Institute (IET), the European Association of International Education (EAIE), the International Association of Semiotic Studies (IASS), the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS), the network of Institutes and Schools on Public Administration in Central and Eastern Europe (NISPASee), the European Consortium on Political Studies, the International PR Organization (IPRA), Leonardo international network for academic mobility (LEO-NET), the Informal European Theatre Meeting (IETM), the European Association of Students in Theater (EAST), the European League of Institutes of Arts (ELIA), etc.

The strategy for enrollment of foreign students is part of the process of internationalization in universities. The strategy of the NBU for enrollment of foreign students is updated every year and supplemented by new proposals and options. More and more programs attract students from abroad who are taught in Bulgarian, English or French. The greatest number of applicants comes from.
