Work Package 2 focuses on the identification of the industries and market need for Open innovation education in Europe. The importance of open innovation for European industry and economy has been widely acknowledged both on the levels of commercial firms and policymaking. However, teaching of this new management paradigm is lagging behind with only a handful of individual courses or modules available across European higher education institutions. At the time of proposal submission [NB: March 2013], there are only half a dozen individual courses on the topic fragmented across Europe (in Finland, Spain, Belgium, Portugal and UK).
To enable teaching open innovation on the basis of actual industry needs, a collection and categorization of innovation management needs of the key European industries are gathered and collated with segmentation based on country, industry and sector of operation.
This process is conducted within the Task 1 (T2.1.).
The selection of key industries included to the need identification process is done based on country and statistical economic significance and with help of all partners in the OI-Net who will share experience, knowledge and expertise from local markets. Furthermore, each country in the academic network is viewed from publicly available statistics (Eurostat) and the top 6-10 industries in terms of contribution to national GDP are selected. A survey is developed to gather needs and information essential to developing the OI curriculum and recommendations for subsequent customization to different segments.
The survey (Task 2, T2.2) will gather information on the current level of OI adoption and proficiency, the industry need for OI management skills needed and knowledge and particular skills required for fresh graduates new open innovation managers and other employees.
Further the recommendation for open innovation curricula development are provided based on the market and industrial needs in different countries and segments (T2.3, D2.3). By collating and categorizing the identified needs by country, industry and sector, WP2 provides an industry need report that will be the basis for subsequent WPs to develop the OI curriculum, segment-specific customizations and the collection of specific cases and practices of open innovation (WP3).
WP2 is responsible for identification market and industrial needs for open innovation personnel to enable teaching industry-relevant skills in higher education institutions that correspond to actual current needs in business.
This objective can be divided to two sub objectives:
- To collect, process and categorize industry needs for open innovation management from all the member countries in the academic network on OI awareness, adoption, implementation, needs and skill requirements for educated personnel.
- To provide recommendations for higher education institutions for OI education development based on the European market and industrial needs.
- T2.1. Develop industry need collection process and survey
- T2.2. Europe-wide collection of industrial needs for open innovation education
- T2.3. Provide recommendation for OI curricula development based on the market and industrial needs in different countries and segments (to be exploited in WP 3, 4, 5)
